I'm a little embarrassed to confess…
… not only does my road bike have a triple chain ring, but today I had to use it. It was my first ride back after several years off (and only one short mountain bike earlier this week). It was meant to be the river loop, 35 km, so I rode in to meet Ruth at Bike Obsession, 12 km along Nudgee Road, Kingsford Smith Drive and Breakfast Creek Road. Yep, brave or stupid. But then we added in...

Do yourself a favour
Do you eat eggs? Do you buy them at the store? Then here’s your chance to do yourself a favour. I finally bought a very good carton of store-bought eggs. They’re big and they taste great. These eggs are so yolky that even when I stirred too much milk in today before nuking them, the scrambled eggs came out of the microwave as brightly gold as a sunrise. Yum. So what makes a good egg?...

When Harris created these works, he was in his early eighties. Rock on, old dude. I love your work, and I hope you are resting in peace.

So I went back to collect my bike…
So I went back to collect my bike…
LBS guy: Oh, you're picking up your bike?
me: Yes—and dropping this one off for a service.
LBS guy: So, we were trying to figure out what you said the other day… did you say you ran 272 kays?

Do me a favour? →
Here’s my post for the Show-Off Writing Contest: Athletic Edition. I’ve written a creative nonfiction piece about my run at Caboolture. This is the short version at around 1200 words; I submitted a longer 2000 word piece for my final assessment at uni. If you like it, please click ‘like’ and if you’ve got some feedback, please get in on the commenting :D

I don't like to brag about running…
I run because I love it. I don't care how competitive you are, it's not enough to get you through 48 hours of running unless you're also either really stupid, or really in love with the feeling of running. Some might say it's the same thing. So I'm not one to tally up my ultras or rate my performances—I think running long distances is something that everyone is capable of, with the right attention to good technique and a little bit of dedication when they first start.
I don't like to brag about running, but sometimes the situation calls for it. Like this morning, when I rode my mountain bike to the local bike shop (LBS) for a service, and copped the "running ruins your knees" myth. I'd expect better from someone who probably repeatedly hears that "cycling is dangerous".
me: Most of my friends are distance runners, and several of them do road cycling for cross training, so I'm trying to get them to come across to the dark side. Oh, but you probably think running is the dark side.
LBS guy: Yeah. Well, when their knees are shot, they can come over to cycling.
me: Running isn't bad for your knees—that's a myth.
LBS guy: You want to look at my knees?
what I want to say: No, I want to look at your terrible running gait that stuffed up your knees.
me: You want to look at my knees? I ran 272 kays last weekend, and my knees are fine.
Other LBS guy: What? You rode 272 kays?
me: No, I ran 272 kays.
LBS guy: 272 kays?
me: Yep.
The silence was deafening. And, yes, I ran home.
